Killers of the Flower Moon: Apple & Paramount announce worldwide theatrical release plans for Martin Scorsese’s next epic

If you’re excited about Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, you might want to have a seat. Apple Original Films is ready to share the details about the film’s release, and they involve a worldwide theatrical rollout. The highly-anticipated movie, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, finds Apple and Paramount teaming up to release the film theatrically worldwide, with a limited Friday, October 6 release, then wide on October 20. This release plan will happen before Killers of the Flower Moon streams globally on Apple TV+.

The question on everyone’s mind is: Will Killers of the Flower Moon screen at this year’s Cannes Film Festival? If Killers plays at Cannes, that leaves a five-month gap between the event and the film’s theatrical release. Insiders expect Scorsese’s new film to go to Cannes, but the jury remains mum on those plans.

Killers of the Flower Moon is the sixth collaboration between Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. Their working relationship began with 2002’s Gangs of New York, with DiCaprio appearing in four of the director’s subsequent seven films. It will also mark the 10th teaming of Scorsese and Robert De Niro, which took a significant hiatus between 1995’s Casino and 2019’s The Irishman. (DiCaprio and De Niro did both appear in a 2015 short film directed by Scorsese called The Audition.) Other cast members include Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, and Lily Gladstone. The film has a reported $200 million budget, putting it somewhere in the neighborhood of The Irishman’s, which sits somewhere between $159-$250 million.

The official plot for Killers of the Flower Moon reads: “In 1920s Oklahoma, the Osage Nation were the richest people per capita in the world after oil was discovered under their land. And then they were murdered, one by one. As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case and unraveled a chilling conspiracy and one of the most monstrous crimes in American history.”

Are you looking forward to Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon? Do you think the director and DiCaprio still have the magic that made them household names among cinephiles? Feel free to sound off in the comments below.
