The Free Movie of the Day we have for you today is the sci-fi drama The Cage, which is also known as La Jaula. Directed by José Ignacio Salaverría, who also crafted the screenplay with Inti Torres Melo, The Cage has the following synopsis: Earth has been depopulated by a superior intelligence. Since then, an enormous floating ship watches from the sky without showing any greater sign of life. Eva and Fausto have survived together for years, but reality has begun to lose meaning for them. One day, the routine that they are used to is disrupted by the arrival of a third survivor, Dafne. From that moment on, the three of them start to live as members of a species in danger of extinction – they become hedonists. Under stress from the constant threat, Fausto begins to rave, and puts all of their lives in danger. Deranged, he decides to face the threat and end his life in a suicide attack, unwittingly engendering a much bigger plan that will be impossible to stop.
The characters mentioned in the synopsis are played by Karina Velasquez, Ananda Troconis, and Juvel Vielma. Also in the cast are Leónidas Urbina, Ilya Izaguirre, Rodrigo Pagés, Natalia Romero, Simón González, Paola Bohórquez, Nectario Yepes, Reinaldo Cárdenas, Andrea Moncada, Edison Fernández, Edgar Mata, Angélica Urdaneta, Andrea Méndez, and Andrés Berrios.
The Cage was Salaverria’s feature directorial debut. He had previously worked as a camera operator and grip on short films. Since making The Cage, he has been working on the comedies Nuncio Alberto se quiere morir (Nuncio Alberto Wants to Die) and Esto no es SadFace (This Is Not SadFace), both of which are said to be in post-production.
