Avatar: The Way of Water and the first Avatar get 4K UHD releases in June

Avatar: The Way of Water is getting its Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K release in June, and the first Avatar gets a 4K release the same day

Last week, we learned that director James Cameron’s long-awaited Avatar sequel Avatar: The Way of Water (read our review HERE) will begin streaming on both Disney+ and Max on June 7th. Now it has been confirmed that fans will only have to wait thirteen days beyond that before they’ll be able to buy a copy of the film on physical media. Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled to receive a 4K UHD, Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, and DVD release on June 20th. The first film will also get a 4K UHD release on that date.

A press release notes that the home video release of Avatar: The Way of Water will include over three hours of bonus content featuring the filmmakers, cast and crew. The 4K UHD edition of the original Avatar has both existing and new bonus features including “Memories From Avatar,” where Producer Jon Landau leads a spirited conversation with cast members, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang, recalling warm memories from production and reflecting on the extraordinary success of the film. Plus “Avatar: A Look Back,” provides a retrospective where cast and filmmakers reflect on their extraordinary journey making Avatar, the groundbreaking technologies they used to create an unparalleled cinematic experience, and the profound effect the film had on audiences worldwide.

Directed by Cameron from a screenplay he wrote with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Avatar: The Way of Water has the following synopsis: Set 14 years after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water will find Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) having started a family, but when the Resources Development Administration (RDA) returns to Pandora, the family is forced to flee to the reef. Jake and Neytiri’s family includes Na’vi kids Neteyam (Jamie Flatter), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss), but they also have Miles Socorro (Jack Champion). Also known as Spider, the young boy was born at the military base on Pandora but was too small to return to Earth so he has been raised by Jake and Neytiri.

The success of Avatar: The Way of Water has cleared the way for not only Avatar 3 (which is scheduled to reach theatres on December 20, 2024) but also Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 – which will be released on December 18, 2026 and December 22, 2028, respectively. What we know about the future sequels so far is that Avatar 3 will introduce villainous Na’vi known as the Ash PeopleAvatar 4 will “go nuts in a good way“, and Avatar 5 will involve a journey to Earth. If things keep going this well as the franchise continues, we might even get Avatar 6 and 7.

Will you be buying a physical media copy of Avatar: The Way of Water, and/or will you be getting the 4K release of the first film? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
