Update: Quentin Tarantino drops new details on his final film, The Movie Critic

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino preps The Movie Critic as his final movie and will start shooting this fall.

While in Paris, Quentin Tarantino dropped a few new details on what is expected to be his final movie. The director said he’s finished the script for the project, which he confirms will be titled The Movie Critic, and hopes to start shooting later this year. He added that The Movie Critic will be set in 1977 but will not be about Pauline Kael or devoted to any specific critic.

Even since Quentin Tarantino announced that he would be calling it quits with his next film, fans have wondered what the director’s final movie would be. THR has reported that Quentin Tarantino is preparing to direct The Movie Critic this fall as his final movie, based on a script he wrote.

Plot details about The Movie Critic are being kept under wraps at this time, but THR’s sources have described the story as “being set in late 1970s Los Angeles with a female lead at its center.” That’s about all we know, but THR wonders if the story could involve Pauline Kael, one of the most influential movie critics of all time. Tarantino has long been a fan of Kael, so it’s not outside the realm of possibility that the director might want to pay tribute to her with his final movie. If you were holding out for Kill Bill Vol. 3, I suppose you’re out of luck. The concept would also give Tarantino a chance to dip his toe into all the genres he’s never had the opportunity to do; after all, a movie critic needs movies to critique.

The Movie Critic doesn’t have a home at the moment, but THR’s report states that the project may be shopped to studios or buyers as early as this week. Quentin Tarantino’s previous movies had mainly been distributed by Miramax/The Weinstein Company, but after the whole Harvey Weinstein scandal, Sony Pictures stepped up to distribute his most recent movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

I think when it comes to theatrical movies, I’ve come to the end of the road,” Quentin Tarantino said in 2019 “I see myself writing books and starting to write theatre, so I’ll still be creative. I just think I’ve given all I have to give to movies.” Tarantino has previously said that his final movie would likely be more “epilogue-y” than what he’s done before. “If you think about the idea of all the movies telling one story, and each film is like a train boxcar, connected to each other, this one would sort of be the big show-stopping climax of it all,” Tarantino said. “And I could imagine that the 10th one would be a little more epilogue-y.
