The sequel to the Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton tornado movie is keeping its plot under wraps, but the cast is taking shape.
The cast of the spiritual sequel to 1996’s natural disaster thrill ride, Twister, is continuing to take shape. Daisy Edgar-Jones of Where the Crawdads Sing and Normal People stars in the film as a former storm chaser called back into action. It was then reported that the breakout star of Top Gun: Maverick, Glen Powell, would join the cast in an undisclosed role. Now, Variety reports that Daryl McCormack has now joined the project.
McCormack is known for such credits that include Peaky Blinders, which starred Oppenheimer‘s Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy, Bad Sisters, and recently starred alongside Emma Thompson in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. It is said that McCormack will be playing a supporting role to Daisy Edgar-Jones’ character. Whether that be a storm-chasing team member or love interest, or something else remains to be seen. McCormack had impressed audiences and was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Leading Actor for his role in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. He had also been nominated for BAFTA EE Rising Star Award. The project, being his first tentpole film, certainly contributes to his rising stardom. His role in the Bad Sisters TV series has also earned him a nomination for Best Actor in a supporting role – drama category at the Irish Film and Television Awards.
The upcoming installment is to be a “new chapter” in the IP. Although, it was once thought that Edgar-Jones would be directly related to the first by playing the grown-up daughter of the original’s Jo and Bill, played by Helen Hunt and the late, great Bill Paxton. This property was originally brought to us by author extraordinaire Michael Crichton, who co-wrote the first movie’s screenplay, and the director of Speed, Jan De Bont. The new film will be penned by the writer of The Revenant, Mark L. Smith, while the director of Minari, Lee Issac Chung, is attached to direct the cyclone mayhem this time around.
Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment will be once again producing the sequel, with Frank Marshall returning to produce through his and Kathleen Kennedy’s production company. Warner Bros. Pictures is co-financing Twisters along with Universal Pictures.
