The animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft picks up after the events of the highly successful Tomb Raider video game Survivor trilogy (Tomb Raider; Rise of the Tomb Raider; Shadow of the Tomb Raider), and will chart the globetrotting heroine’s next chapter as the iconic adventurer. More than 25 years after her first appearance, Lara Croft (voiced by Hayley Atwell) continues to explore ancient mysteries and uncover lost truths across breathtaking and dangerous destinations.

Following the events of the Survivor series, Lara Croft has abandoned her friends to embark on increasingly more perilous solo adventures. But she must return home when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with an uncanny personal connection. Hayley Atwell joins Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in the pantheon of actresses playing Lara Croft for an adaptation of the fearless explorer’s antics. Lara’s been uncovering ancient secrets long before Uncharted‘s Nathan Drake and Netflix’s Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft looks to finally do the character justice with jaw-dropping animation, dynamic sound design, and thrilling set pieces. I can’t think of a better actress to voice Lara than Hayley Atwell, a woman of class, immense talent, and badassery. Could this be the adaptation fans have waited decades to see? Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters is set to return for another season and the dark comedy is said to be returning in the vein of the show Big Little Lies. Entertainment Weekly has the new first look of the upcoming season with some details of the story continuation revealed. The first thing unveiled is the newest image of the Garvey sisters pictured above. After two years, we get a new look at Sharon Horgan as Eva, Anne-Marie Duff as Grace, Eva Birthistle as Ursula, Sarah Greene as Bibi, and Eve Hewson as Becka.

Apple has announced that the second season of Bad Sisters will premiere with two episodes of the eight-episode run on Wednesday, November 13. Then, it will be shifting to a one-episode weekly release every Wednesday through December 25.

Season 2 is said to be picking up two years after the sisters escaped the events of the first season. However, trouble is not far behind as the logline for the upcoming season’s plot reads, “When past truths resurface, the ladies are thrust back into the spotlight, suspicions are at an all-time high, lies are told, secrets revealed, and the sisters are forced to work out who they can trust.”

The cast returning from season 1 will include Daryl McCormack (who was seen recently in this year’s big hit Twisters) as Matt Claffin, who ended up falling in love with Becka last season. Barry Ward returns as Inspector Fergal Loftus. Michael Smiley is back as Roger Muldoon, Grace’s kind-hearted next-door neighbor. Additionally, Saise Quinn returns as Grace’s daughter Blanaid. Yasmine Akram is back as Bibi’s wife Nora. Jonjo O’Neill reprises Ursula’s husband Donal Flynn. Also, Peter Claffey (who is also notably taking the lead in the Game of Thrones spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) returns as Becka’s ex, Callum.

Season 2 will also bring in a new cast of characters that will include Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve, Harry Potter), Owen McDonnell (True Detective: Night Country, Great Expectations), Thaddea Graham (Sex Education, Doctor Who), Deirdre Mullins (Shadow and Bone), Lorcan Cranitch (The Crown), Liz Fitzgibbon (Normal People), and Justine Mitchell (Conversations With Friends, Derry Girls).

Garth Ennis has written some great, popular comic books over the years, with some of his work including the creation of the books Preacher and The Boys, and fan favorite runs on Marvel’s The Punisher. Preacher and The Boys have both gotten TV series adaptations, and ideas from Ennis’s Punisher books have made it to the screen. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that the Ennis-created horror comic Crossed is also getting an adaptation, with the independent company Six Studios picking up the rights to make a film based on the series.

Ennis has written the screenplay for the Crossed film, and Six Studios is searching for a director. They’re planning to put together a budget in $2 million to $3 million range for the project… but if the right talent comes on board, the budget could be increased. The hope is that, no matter who ends up taking the helm or starring in the film, Crossed will be heading into production this fall.

Crossed takes place in a pandemic-stricken world, in which those who catch a disease are marked with a cross-like rash on their faces. Those afflicted follow their worst impulses — think a zombie apocalypse, but instead of zombies, these are humans who retain their intellect, but are homicidal maniacs. The screenplay Ennis wrote is said to be based on the first ten issues of the comic, but there’s a lot more source material to pull from if this film were to launch a franchise. There have been more than 200 issues of Crossed comics from various writers and artists.

Carl Choi of Six Studios is producing the Crossed film with Ben Hung of Retro Entertainment and Ken Levin of Nightsky Productions. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Hung and Levin developed the project with Ennis and brought the property to Six Studios. Six Studios’ Jeff Huang is executive producing with Ennis, Carl Amari, and Bill Patterson.

Choi describes the Crossed script as an intimate, human story and the most faithful adaptation of the comics possible. The producer told The Hollywood Reporter that it’s like “Contagion meets The Walking Dead, with hints of Alex Garland’s Civil War, in that it’s a road movie across a ravaged United States.”

While the home featured in the 1982 classic Poltergeist (watch it HERE) sits on the market, looking for a buyer with more than $1 million to spare, Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with the Poltergeist TV series we first heard about back in October of last year. Variety reports that the in-development project has just found the duo that will serve as the show’s writers, showrunners, and executive producers: Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson.

Variety notes that Vazquez has previously worked on the shows Fear the Walking Dead, Star Trek: Discovery, Once Upon a Time, Prison Break, and Nikita. She has also written for Marvel Comics, teaming up with Carlos Gomez for the comic book series America Chavez: Made in the USA. As for Thompson, he was a writer and co-executive producer on Supernatural and was also creator and showrunner of the prequel series The Winchesters. He has Marvel Comics experience of his own, having written for characters like Silk, Venom, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man.

Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey are set to executive produce the Poltergeist TV series for Amblin Television.

Tobe Hooper, who had previously made The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Eaten Alive, Salem’s Lot, and The Funhouse, directed Poltergeist from a screenplay Steven Spielberg wrote with Michael Grais and Mark Victor. Spielberg also crafted the initial story. The film has the following synopsis: Strange and creepy happenings beset an average California family, the Freelings — Steve, Diane, teenaged Dana, eight-year-old Robbie, and five-year-old Carol Ann — when ghosts commune with them through the television set. Initially friendly and playful, the spirits turn unexpectedly menacing, and, when Carol Ann goes missing, Steve and Diane turn to a parapsychologist and eventually an exorcist for help.

Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, Dominique Dunne, Oliver Robins, Heather O’Rourke, Beatrice Straight, Michael McManus, Virginia Kiser, Martin Casella, Richard Lawson, James Karen, Dirk Blocker, and Zelda Rubinstein starred in the film, with appearances by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2‘s Lou Perryman and Predator‘s Sonny Landham.

Poltergeist TV series plot details have not yet been revealed.

Last month, we learned that the North American distribution rights to the action horror film Azrael are in the hands of IFC Films and the Shudder streaming service, with IFC Films having chosen a date for the theatrical release: September 27th. (The movie will then be making its way to Shudder sometime later in the year.) With the theatrical release date now just one month away, a trailer for Azrael has made its way online and can be seen in the embed above.

Directed by E.L. Katz (The Haunting of Bly Manor) from an original screenplay by You’re Next writer Simon Barrett, Azrael has the following synopsis: In a world in which no one speaks, a devout female-led community hunts down a young woman who has escaped her imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, Azrael is to be sacrificed to pacify an ancient evil that resides deep within the surrounding wilderness – yet she will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival. From the seeds of this gritty, relentless parable of sacrifice and salvation, comes an immersive, real-time, action horror tale.

Samara Weaving, whose previous credits include Ready or Not, Mayhem, The Babysitter, Guns Akimbo, Scream VI, and episodes of Ash vs. Evil Dead, plays the title character.

Joker financier Jason Cloth and his C2 Motion Picture Group partner Dave Caplan provided the financing for Azrael. Caplan and Barrett produced the film with Dan Kagan, while Cloth served as executive producer alongside Katrin Kissa.

Michael Rothstein and Sam Hall’s Mossbank are handling the international sales. Rothstein provided the following statement: “From the first minute we read it, we were captivated by the world of Azrael and the potential of a film so relentless and action-packed for its genre – distinguished by its own unique voice, which has so much to say. E.L. Katz and Simon Barrett have delivered something truly visionary, which will undoubtedly connect with a global legion of fans. And we couldn’t think of a more perfect heroine in Samara Weaving, who’s at the peak of her powers right now.“

Unlike scores of Batgirl fans (myself included), Michael Keaton has no regrets about Warner Bros shelving the Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah-directed superhero movie. Keaton suited up as Bruce Wayne/Batman for DC’s The Flash and was supposed to reprise Batman again for Batgirl, but then WB axed the film in favor of a tax cut during a rash of poor decision-making for the company. The move to cancel Batgirl, an all-but-complete film starring actors like Leslie Grace, Brandon Fraser, and J.K. Simmons, sent shockwaves throughout the superhero community, but Keaton appears unaffected.

Speaking with GQ, Michael Keaton discussed Batgirl’s cancellation and whether or not the project’s fate bothers him. “No, I didn’t care one way or another. Big, fun, nice check,” Keaton explains. GQ also mentions that Keaton is “rubbing his fingers together in the universal gesture for moolah.”

While he might not regret the movie never seeing the light of day, Keaton says he enjoyed working alongside Arbi and Fallah on the defunct film. “I like those boys. They’re nice guys,” Keaton said about the directing duo. “I pull for them. I want them to succeed, and I think they felt very badly, and that made me feel bad. Me? I’m good.”

Batgirl was through its post-production stage when Warner Bros canceled it. While the studio said the film “was not releasable,” I find that difficult to believe given the talent involved. Still, Keaton seems to have had a blast playing Batman again for Andrés Muschietti’s The Flash, starring embattled actor Ezra Miller as Barry Allen. The multiverse-focused film finds Miller’s Barry Allen tapping Keaton’s Bruce Wayne for help when faced with an insurmountable threat. Keaton’s Wayne is retired, grizzled, and apathetic when introduced in the film but quickly gets back into the cape and cowl when push comes to shove.

On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. Things were moving ahead at a good pace, filming was expected to begin this July, but then the project hit a speed bump at the end of April with the firing of Fuller and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray. Now, Deadline reports that Crystal Lake is getting back on track with the hiring of a new showrunner – and that person is Brad Caleb Kane, who also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry, the It prequel series that’s coming to HBO next year.

In addition to showrunner, Kane will be credited as creator, writer, and executive producer of Crystal Lake. It remains to be seen if Kane will use anything from the original Fuller scripts and outlines, or if he’ll be scrapping those and starting over completely.

Kane did provide the following statement: “From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask. Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothing’s defined the genre more than Friday The 13th. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24.“

In addition to It: Welcome to Derry, Kane’s TV credits include Fringe, Black Sails, Lodge 49, Moonhaven, Warrior, and Tokyo Vice.

A while back, an article published by The Wrap sought to figure out why Crystal Lake fell apart just a few months before filming was scheduled to begin. Their sources gave a lot of conflicting information, but it seemed to boil down to concerns about Fuller’s vision, late scripts, a ballooning budget (it was surpassing the $85 million being provided for the first season), unpaid writers… and possibly A24 executives’ lack of TV experience.

Fuller’s approach to the material was to make each season a deconstruction of the first four Friday the 13th films. “The series would incorporate lore from several sequels but remix that material in a way similar to Fuller’s Hannibal, which interpolated the Thomas Harris novels for three seasons.” So season 1 would be set “in the immediate aftermath of the drowning of a young Jason Voorhees,” and it would center on his mother Pam as she goes on a homicidal rampage of revenge. That rampage doesn’t turn out well for Pam, opening the door for Jason to return and start his own killing spree. Charlize Theron was on the wish list to play Pam, and Claire Danes was actually offered a one season deal to play the character, but she turned it down. Vincenzo Natali (Cube) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) were going to be directing episodes, while Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson was writing an episode that would have been an hour-long chase sequence “set entirely on a frozen Crystal Lake, with the summer camp’s cabins trapped under snow drifts.”

Each episode of Crystal Lake was set to have a budget of $9.6 million, but A24 reportedly wanted to cut that in half. Maybe Kane’s vision will allow them to do that.

No one knows chaos theory like Jeff Goldblum. In Netflix‘s new KAOS trailer, the seriously sauve actor is about to teach a lesson in vengeance, disorder, and the consequences of messing with the natural order, his order. Suppose the world’s got you on edge, and the media cycle makes you want to bury your head in the sand until November 6. In that case, Netflix is about to unleash a distraction of epic proportions, thanks to a new series about faith, defiance, and owning up to one’s mistakes.

KAOS is a dark comedy series from creator Charlie Covell and writer Georgia Christou. Georgi Banks-Davis directs five episodes of KOAS, while Runyararo Mapfumo shoots the remaining three. Jeff Goldblum leads the cast, including Aurora Perrieau, Debi Mazar, Fady Elsayed, Sam Buttery, Matthew Koon, Elander Moore, Susan Wooldridge, Shila Ommi, and Amanda Douge.

The latest trailer for Netflix’s KAOS finds Jeff Goldblum’s King of the Gods lording over his creation (mortals) and disappointed by their lack of respect for his hard work. They’ve made a mockery of the world he helped create, and to teach them all a lesson, he’s going to turn up the heat, and by heat, I mean natural disasters, church-related scandals, and more. No human is safe from his wrath, but a select few could teach him a thing or two about his mistakes and how to right those wrongs.

Zeus’ once reliable brother, Hades, God of the Underworld, is secretly losing his grip on his dark dominion. There is a backlog of dead waiting to be processed and they are growing restless. The wellbeing of mere mortals is of little interest to him. Unfortunately for the Gods some of those mortals are beginning to realise this…

These mortals – Riddy (Aurora Perrineau), Orpheus (Killian Scott), Caneus (Misia Butler) and Ari (Leila Farzad) – come from different walks of life and are all cosmically connected in the battle against Zeus. Each one has a very different role to play, any one of them may be destined to bring down the Gods.

Netflix’s KAOS trailer finds the gods in a contemporary setting instead of an imagined metropolis from thousands of years ago. Still, their vanity remains, and hell hath no fury like a god made to feel unimportant in the grand scheme of existence. With power on their side, the gods delight in demonstrating their wrath for non-believers, and not everyone will make it out of the exhibition alive.

Welcome to The Best Movie You NEVER Saw, a column dedicated to examining films that have flown under the radar or gained traction throughout the years, earning them a place as a cult classic or underrated gem that was either before it’s time and/or has aged like a fine wine.

With this article, we’re taking a look back at the 1990 thriller Revenge, which was directed by the late, great Tony Scott. Since today – August 19th – marks the anniversary of Scott’s death, we felt this would be an appropriate time to dig into one of his lesser known films, and Revenge fits the bill, even though Quentin Tarantino (who wrote the Scott classic True Romance) has referred to this one as Scott’s masterpiece.

THE STORY: Michael Cochran (Kevin Costner) , a retired Naval aviator, visits his old friend, Tibey Mendez (Anthony Quinn) at his hacienda in Mexico, never questioning the older man’s powerful connections to the elite or the source of his wealth. When Cochran starts an affair with Tibey’s gorgeous, much-younger wife Miryea (Madeleine Stowe), he learns the hard way that Tibey’s not one to be crossed.

THE HISTORY: I get a lot of comments from readers complaining that the films I’ve chosen for this column aren’t obscure enough. Fair enough – although the intention has always been to encourage readers to give unjustly ignored movies a second look. However, I think this week’s movie may be one a lot of our readers haven’t seen, given how it utterly sank like a stone at the box office, only picking up some notoriety when director Tony Scott put together an unrated director’s cut Blu-ray release shortly before his tragic death.

The movie is REVENGE, which was released in early 1990, and occupies a weird space in the careers of the director, Scott, and star Kevin Costner. For Scott, he was coming off two huge blockbusters with Don Simpson & Jerry Bruckheimer, TOP GUN & BEVERLY HILLS COP 2, and after this he’d return to their stable for DAYS OF THUNDER. As for Costner, he was coming off three back-to-back hits, THE UNTOUCHABLES, BULL DURHAM and FIELD OF DREAMS. This one tried to re-position him as an edgy male lead, something that didn’t quite work at the time – as audiences still preferred him in more heroic, noble parts, such as his own DANCES WITH WOLVES, which would come out that same year .

Based on a novella by Jim Harrison (the same book contains the story LEGENDS OF THE FALL would be based on), this was a hot project all throughout the eighties, with guys like Don Johnson flirting with the part Costner would play, while none other than Jack Nicholson coveted the Tibey Mendez part. Eventually, old-time producer Ray Stark would get the rights, and therein lies where the trouble started, as Scott’s hard-edged thriller wasn’t the romantic drama Stark wanted – which is odd as he pretty much filmed the novella (it’s a great, quick read). The version that hit theaters was softened somewhat, and Scott was never really happy with it, which is why he recut it years later (making it twenty-minutes shorter). Audiences were indifferent, with it grossing only $15 million, a shock given how hot Costner’s star power was at the time, but not much of a surprise when you see the movie, especially the incredibly depressing (but appropriate) ending, which no studio would have ever the stones to put out today. It had its champions though, among them Quentin Tarantino, whose quote is featured on the director’s cut, and would work with him on TRUE ROMANCE a few years later.

WHY IT’S GREAT: REVENGE is a movie that demands a certain sophistication, or rather, an open mind. I saw it as a kid, when I was expecting it to be a Kevin Costner action flick, and I hated it, especially the bummer ending, which denied me the violent REVENGE I thought was promised to me by the title. What I didn’t realize then was that the revenge of the title was not actually Costner’s to take, but Anthony Quinn’s. His Tibey tries to act honorably towards his friend Cochran, giving him every chance he can to bail out, but circumstance demands he seek revenge, almost as a way to avoid losing face to his violent associates. That said, his revenge is especially sadistic and cruel, especially against Miryea, whose face he disfigures, and forces into a life of prostitution. Her ultimate fate gives the film an interesting shading as she suffers the most for Cochran’s sins and Tibey’s wounded (and fragile) machismo. By comparison, Cochran gets off easy, being beaten to near death. Worse, his dog is also killed.

The movie is much more of a slow-burn than an action thriller, with the first half devoted to the relationships between Cochran, Miryea and Tibey, while the second half becomes more of a Sam Peckinpah-style thriller. Costner excels as the scarred-up tough guy, in one memorable scene violently slashing the throat of one of his assailants. He’s helped out by the late Miguel Ferrer and John Leguizamo in an early role.

As good as Costner and Stowe are (she’s unbelievably gorgeous – and very sympathetic), Quinn steals the show, with the most striking difference between the two cuts behind how he’s more of the lead in the shorter version than Costner, something which I’m sure the producers had problems with. He’s also made a somewhat more sympathetic figure, something which makes the ending a lot easier to swallow. Veteran character actor James Gammon also has a great bit as a cowboy trucker who briefly teams-up with Cochran, a nice bit of flavoring left over from the novella. As for Scott, his style is superb, and complimented by a terrific score by Jack Nitzsche (STARMAN), several themes of which were used over and over in nineties action movie trailers.

BEST SCENE: Until revisiting it as an adult, I also had trouble with the fact that Costner didn’t blow Quinn away during their climactic confrontation. Watching it now, I get it – Costner’s sole focus is to get Miryea back, and if Tibey lets him know where she is, he’s gonna leave him to his own demons, which have already started to consume him. This bit here ranks among the most atypical final showdowns in action movie history.

SEE IT: REVENGE is available on DVD/Blu-ray, mostly in the director’s cut form, although an HD version of the theatrical (twenty minutes longer) is currently streaming on Crackle for free.

PARTING SHOT: For me, REVENGE stands as one of Tony Scott’s greatest films, and watching it again, I’m struck more than ever by what a tragic loss his passing in 2012 was. I think, in some ways, this is most personal film and one anyone who calls themselves a fan of his needs to track down.

Celebrity Alignment: Red Lobster has recently garnered support from notable celebrities, including Flava Flav, who has added a touch of star power to the initiative. Variety is reporting that Danielle Fishel, who played Topanga Lawrence in the popular 90s sitcom Boy Meets World, has recently revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. However, the good news is it was caught early and the actress is assuring fans that she’ll be ok. In her podcast, Pod Meets World, which she co-hosts with Boy Meets World castmates Will Friedle and Rider Strong, Fishel opens up about receiving her diagnosis at 43 years old. She stated, “I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for Ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer. It’s very very very early, it’s technically stage zero.”

Fishel tells listeners that she was diagnosed with “high-grade DCIS with micro-invasion” and is planning to have surgery to remove it. She explains the big decisions that she’s made over the course of events. She admits that she had initially planned to only tell her immediate family and her friends, but no one else. Fishel stated, “I’ve had to make a lot of decisions over the last couple of days.” She thought she just wanted to “suffer in silence” and “suck it up,” but was inspired to take a different route when reading up material from author Glennon Doyle, who has argued that women need to help others at the beginning stages or during the “messy middle” of a battle instead of just waiting until they are out of the experience.

Fishel credits making her annual mammogram appointment the day she had received a text reminder to do so and explained, “They found it so, so, so early that I’m going to be fine. So, I want to share this because I hope that it will encourage anyone to get in there. If it’s time for your appointment, if you’ve never had an appointment before, get in there. If you have to find out that you have cancer, find out when it’s at stage 0, if possible.”

On the podcast, her co-hosts Friedle and Strong were revealed to be the close friends she told after her family. Friedle, who played the big brother Eric Matthews on Boy Meets World, said, “We love you, and you know that we’ve got you. Whatever you need, we’re here. You are going to be fine, and you might have some sucky days coming up, but we’re here for you.”

Claudia Doumit, who is best known for playing congresswoman Victoria Neuman on the Prime Video series The Boys, is the latest to join the cast of SOULM8TE, which is “a new movie in the M3GAN universe” that is set to reach theatres on January 2, 2026. We’ve previously heard that the film is set to star Evil Dead Rise actress Lily Sullivan and David Rysdahl, whose credits include Fargo season 5, The Family, No Exit, Black Mirror, Oppenheimer, and Booger. The news of Doumit’s involvement was broken by Deadline today.

As mentioned, SOULM8TE is set in the same world as the 2022 film M3GAN and its upcoming sequel M3GAN 2.0, which is aiming for a June 27, 2025 theatrical release. These films come from the recently merged companies Atomic Monster (headed up by James Wan) and Blumhouse Productions (headed up by Jason Blum).

James Wan, his wife Ingrid Bisu, and Rafael Jordan (Salvage Marines) crafted the story for this one, with Jordan writing the first draft of the screenplay. Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother) is on board to direct the film and has done her own rewrite of the script. SOULM8TE will show us what happens when a man acquires an Artificially Intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate. Rysdahl is playing the man, while Sullivan plays the android. Details on the role Doumit will be playing have not been revealed.

James Wan and Jason Blum are producing SOULM8TE, while Michael Clear and Judson Scott of Atomic Monster serve as executive producers with with Ingrid Bisu. Alayna Glasthal is the executive leading the project for Atomic Monster.

Fire up the Jaegers! Variety reports that Legendary Entertainment is developing a Pacific Rim TV series with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Eric Heisserer.

Heisserer recently entered a first-look television deal with Legendary, and this Pacific Rim TV series will be the first project developed. Under the deal, Heisserer will “develop and shepherd IP-driven and related projects for Legendary” through his Chronology banner alongside co-founder Carmen Lewis. The Pacific Rim TV series will be a prequel, telling the origin of the conflict between humanity and the Kaiju.

“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” said Jason Clodfelter, president of Legendary Television. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular ‘Pacific Rim’ universe. In addition to Arrival, Heisserer is best known for developing Shadow and Bone, a fantasy series based on the works of Leigh Bardugo. The series aired for two seasons on Netflix before it was cancelled.

After an interdimensional portal opens at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, giant monsters begin attacking cities. This prompts humanity to build massive robots known as Jaegers, piloted by two people who share a mental link known as drifting. The first film, which Guillermo del Toro directed, was a lot of fun. Although it underperformed at the North American box office, it did do well enough overseas to get the ball rolling on a sequel. Unfortunately, Del Toro had to drop out, and Pacific Rim Uprising didn’t quite have that same magic. An anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black, aired for two seasons on Netflix, but I’ll admit that I didn’t even remember that happening.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has shown that these types of stories can be told on the small screen, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. The prequel aspect also intrigues me, as the series could revolve around the construction of the first Jaeger.

Here be SPOILERS for Alien: Romulus, consider yourself warned. The highly anticipated Alien: Romulus is now playing in theaters and is a big success, already grossing over $108 million worldwide. However, the film does contain one surprise character whose presence has proven to be somewhat divisive among audiences.

If you’ve seen Alien: Romulus, you know I’m talking about Rook, a damaged synthetic who happens to be the same model as Ash, the character played by Ian Holm in Ridley Scott’s original movie. Using a combination of animatronics, CG, and deepfake, director Fede Álvarez was able to bring Ian Holm back to the Alien franchise, and he explained a bit of the process while speaking with THR.

“Metaphysic is the company that did a lot of the work on the enhancements to the puppet. We had a puppet that talked, and it was all based on an Ian Holm headcast that we found. It was made for The Lord of the Rings, and that was the only headcast that exists of Ian Holm,” Álvarez said. “So the Legacy [Effects] guys that did the animatronic started there, and then some shots needed more help from CG for the lip sync and the lines. But there are some others that didn’t. There are some shots where you are literally looking straight at the animatronic. So it was a combination of things, and while I don’t know exactly what they do, I am sure it is a combination of CG and the headscan. There might be some deepfake in the eyes because it’s the best when it comes to creating the likeness of the eyes, but it’s a whole bag of tricks from 1970s and 1980s technology to technology from yesterday.“

Álvarez added that it was “unfair that the likeness of Ash was never used again,” particularly as both Lance Henriksen and Michael Fassbender got to reprise their android roles. “So when we started thinking about the likeness of this character with Ridley, it was going to be a torso [and head] that we would build,” he said. “So it didn’t need to be the likeness of a current working actor, and Ridley was the one who said, ‘Ash was always the best. He needs to make a comeback.’ So we went for it with the permission of the family: his widow and all of his kids. We wanted to make sure everybody was on board with the idea of bringing his likeness back.” Some fans have taken issue with the film using Holm’s likeness, with others slamming the subpar CG, but it certainly was a surprise.

Set between the events of Alien and Aliens, Alien: Romulus follows “a group of young people on a distant world who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Industry), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). In addition to directing the movie, Fede Álvarez also co-wrote the script alongside Rodo Sayagues.

The film has been receiving largely positive reviews, with our own Chris Bumbray calling it the best installment of the long-running franchise since the first two perfect movies. However, that’s not to say that there aren’t a few clunky moments that detract from an otherwise kick-ass movie. “The fact that director Fede Alvarez was able to make a slam-bang Alien sequel that trumps every other film in the franchise, save the first two, is cause for celebration,” Bumbray wrote. “Yet, it does suffer from the fact that its director was perhaps hampered in his effort to make a lean and mean Alien movie with an ill-advised directive to connect the film to Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. This leaves the film feeling like it’s 75% kick-ass, and 25% space bio-engineering nonsense.” You can read the rest of Bumbray’s review right here.

Superman wrapped production last month, but the film’s release is still nearly a year away. This will give Superman director James Gunn enough time to perfect the VFX during the post-production process, and it’s all by design.

On Threads, a fan brought up the plight of overworked VFX artists who are forced to work very tight deadlines in order to get a film out on time. Now that James Gunn is running DC Studios, things will be different, with Superman getting a lengthy post-production schedule.

“If you do some research you’ll see my films have always taken a different approach and I’ve always given my VFX artist-collaborators time to do their jobs properly, and the respect they deserve,” Gunn wrote. “And the quality of the VFX in those films is uniformly great because of it (and because my friends at Weta and Framestore and ILM and more are amazingly talented).“

Gunn continued, “This is why we wrapped on Superman a year before release and why they’ve been hard at work on many shots for months before that. This is why we start heartily editing during the shoot. It’s why I prepare so vigorously and why we only shoot finished screenplays. And Supergirl, which I’m not directing, is being handled the same way. I can’t praise the VFX artists that help us create magic enough.“

Due to the amount of pre-production work Gunn does on his films (including the unorthodox method of shooting with a complete script), he’s always been left with enough time for quality visual effects. “I wouldn’t make a big film like that without the proper amount of post-production time,” Gunn said.

The members of the Daily Planet newsroom have also expanded for the movie, with Beck Bennet (Saturday Night Live) set to play Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover (The Suicide Squad) as Cat Grant, and newcomer Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has previously teased that Superman will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.” Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to director Tim Burton’s 1988 classic Beetlejuice (watch it HERE), is set to reach theatres on September 6th. Saying the title character’s name three times is the way to summon (or banish) the bio-exorcist, so naming one film Beetlejuice and next Beetlejuice Beetlejuice feels like we’re building up to a Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. In fact, if there isn’t a third movie, it’s going to feel like a missed opportunity at this point. But Burton and the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice producers aren’t getting ahead of themselves. Speaking to Total Film, they revealed that they haven’t even discussed the possibility of a Beetlejuice 3 yet.

Producer Tommy Harper said, “We haven’t talked about where it could go from here, we just talked about making one really good movie. Make it the best you can, and then anything could happen.“

Tim Burton not only didn’t seem comfortable with calling Beetlejuice a franchise, but he wouldn’t even attempt to promote the second film as being bigger or better than its predecessor. He said, “I don’t know. That would make me sound like William Castle or something – ‘the biggest, the greatest, the most fabulous motion picture since Glen or Glenda!’ I hope for the best, really. I just feel good this was done in the spirit and feeling of the original. However the movie does, it was a very good experience for me in that way.” Star Michael Keaton, on the other hand, has said that the sequel has a stronger story than the first movie.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was in development hell for decades before it finally got made. In 1990, Jonathan Gems was hired to write a sequel that was going to be titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. Burton considered having Daniel Waters rewrite that script, Pamela Norris did rewrite it, and Warner Bros. offered Kevin Smith the chance to do another rewrite. He turned it down. Seth Grahame-Smith was hired to write and produce a new version of a sequel in 2011. Mike Vukadinovich was brought on to rewrite his script in 2017.

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, co-creators and co-showrunners of Wednesday, have written the screenplay for Beetlejuice 2 that was actually filmed. Brad Pitt’s Plan B is producing the sequel, which filmed in London before moving to Vermont and Massachusetts.

Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Michael Keaton is back as Beetlejuice and is joined in the cast by Winona Ryder, reprising the role of Lydia Deetz (now the host of a TV series called Ghost House with Lydia Deetz); Catherine O’Hara, back as Lydia’s stepmother Delia; Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter Astrid, Justin Theroux as Lydia’s fiancé Rory,  Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s wife, and Willem Dafoe as a law enforcement officer in the afterlife. The series of murder mysteries that began with the 2019 film Knives Out and continued with the 2022 film Glass Onion is set to keep on going with Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which has writer/director Rian Johnson back at the helm. Johnson and his collaborators are being very secretive about this project right now, but there’s a lot of hype for it – so we figured this would be a good time to start assembling a list of Everything We Know About Wake Up Dead Man. Here we go:

TITLE

Johnson got the title Knives Out from a Radiohead song. When it came time to make the sequel Glass Onion, he got the title from a song by The Beatles. So it’s only fitting that the third film in the franchise have a song-inspired title as well. But while Radiohead and The Beatles were from England, the band that inspired the third title originates from Ireland. The band is U2, and they released a song called “Wake Up Dead Man” back in 1997. We probably shouldn’t expect to glean much about the film from the lyrics, even if Glass Onion did actually feature a glass onion and Johnson said the title would give a hint as to where the story is going… but we can look them over and try. The lyrics have someone who feels alone in the world crying out to Jesus Christ, hoping to earn a place in Heaven when they reach the end of their life. The chorus, of course, gives us the line “Wake Up Dead Man.” And one particularly intriguing verse goes like this: “Were you just around the corner? Did you think to try and warn her? Or are you working on something new? If there’s an order in all of this disorder, is it like a tape recorder? Can we rewind it just once more?”

Some fans have the feeling that Wake Up Dead Man might be darker than the previous two movies, while others are leaning into the idea that it could be a musical, since Johnson is a big fan of Broadway musicals.

One thing we know is that Johnson isn’t happy about these films having A Knives Out Mystery as their subtitles, as he feels it would be more appropriate to call them A Benoit Blanc Mystery. But Knives Out is what he’s stuck with.

STORY

We don’t know anything about the story, which is how it should be when you’re looking forward to a mystery. We can probably expect somebody to get killed at some point, and it will be up to private investigator Benoit Blanc to figure out “who done it.” Whatever the story may be, the film is likely to have a different tone from Glass Onion, which itself had a different tone from Knives Out, being bigger and more over-the-top than its predecessor. Johnson has said that the third film will be “very, very different” from Glass Onion, and told Variety that “The goal is to strike out in a completely new direction tonally and thematically.” He recently took to his X account to say, “I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is. There’s a whole tonal spectrum from John Dickson Carr to Agatha Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies.“

CAST

Any Knives Out mystery has to have an impressive cast. At the heart of each film, we have Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc, and then Johnson builds awesome supporting casts around him. Knives Out co-starred Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, Frank Oz, Riki Lindhome, Christopher Plummer, M. Emmet Walsh, Noah Segan, and more. Glass Onion had Craig sharing the screen with Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, and Noah Segan, with cameos from the likes of Ethan Hawke, Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, Natasha Lyonne, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Yo-Yo Ma, Jake Tapper, and Serena Williams. Joseph Gordon-Levitt also had vocal cameos in both films.

Since the announcement of the title, we’ve been bombarded with Wake Up Dead Man casting news. This time around, Craig will be co-starring with Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Josh O’Connor (The Crown), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), Andrew Scott (Ripley), Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere), Daryl McCormack (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), Mila Kunis (That 70s Show), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction), and Jeremy Renner (Avengers: Endgame) – whose likeness was featured on a hot sauce in Glass Onion. Details on the characters they’ll be playing are being kept under wraps. We’re also not sure if Hugh Grant (Notting Hill) will be showing up as Phillip, Benoit’s domestic partner who had a cameo in the previous film.

Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) has let it be known that he wants to be in Wake Up Dead Man, but he hasn’t gotten his wish so far.

On the first day of filming, June 10th, Johnson shared this image of Daniel Craig on set, back in character as Benoit Blanc:

Josh O’Connor and Glenn Close have since been spotted on set, in their character wardrobe. Not surprisingly, given the title, they appear to be filming a funeral scene:

TWO-PICTURE DEAL

While Knives Out was a Lionsgate release, the franchise made the jump to the Netflix streaming service when Netflix offered Craig, Johnson, and Johnson’s producing partner Ram Bergman 469 million dollars to make two Knives Out sequels for them. The first was Glass Onion and Wake Up Dead Man will be the second, so the deal will be wrapped up and we’ll have to wait and see if Johnson and Craig want to re-team for any more Benoit Blanc mysteries in the future.

Johnson has previously told Variety, “If each one of these can really be what Agatha Christie did, if it can be not just in a totally new location and a new cast, but also trying something exciting, I’ll keep doing it as long as Daniel [Craig] and I are having a good time. I’ll keep making these as long as they let me.” He also told Jess Cagle, “The same way Agatha Christie wrote a bunch of Poirot novels, we can do that with Blanc and keep making new mysteries, you know, whole new cast, whole new location, whole new mystery, it’s just another Beniot Blanc mystery. There’s so many different things you could do with it.“

PRODUCTION AND RELEASE

On May 24th, Johnson said Wake Up Dead Man would be heading into production soon, and when he announced the title, the announcement video promised that we’ll be seeing the film sometime in 2025.

Deadline reports that Netflix has announced the casting of 28 actors for the upcoming whodunnit mystery series Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole. The mystery’s plot is led by “famed anti-hero detective Harry Hole. Underneath the surface, this series is a nuanced character drama about two police officers — and supposed colleagues — operating on opposite sides of the law. Throughout the first season, Harry goes head-to-head with his long-time adversary and corrupt detective, Tom Waaler. Harry is a brilliant but tormented homicide detective who struggles with his demons. As the two navigate the blurred ethical lines of the criminal justice system, Harry must do all he can to catch a serial killer and bring Waaler to justice before it is too late.”

The series was previously reported to star Tobias Santelmann, Joel Kinnaman and Pia Tjelta. THE PLAYERS: Starring: Tom Selleck, Cynthia Rhodes, Kirstie Alley, G. W. Bailey and Gene Simmons. Written and directed by Michael Crichton.

THE HISTORY: While most famous for his novels, Michael Crichton actually had a decent Hollywood career as a director, having a couple of solid hits under his belt (Westworld, Coma, The Great Train Robbery) by the time 1984 rolled around. At the time, Tom Selleck was riding high on the success of “Magnum P.I.” but was bent on breaking into films after landing the role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but being forced to drop it due to his Magnum contract. Thus, in ‘83/84, we got a slew of Tom Selleck vehicles, High Road to China (a better-than-average Indiana Jones clone), Lassiter (not bad – not nearly enough action), and Runaway.

Jack Ramsay is not exactly a character whose name is on the tip of everybody’s tongue, but Runaway was a really great popcorn movie that Michael Crichton wrote and directed. It was very futuristic, it had robots and all sorts of stuff, and it was a nice movie. It was a good movie that I’m very proud of. It didn’t do very well, which was a great disappointment to Michael, who became a friend. And Gene Simmons was in it! Gene hadn’t been in a feature film before, but he was great. We had some great talks and good times. He played this evil guy named Luther who’d invented bullets that could go around corners and hone in on people, and he had robot spiders that could attack people and inject them with poison. I know it sounds hokey, but with Michael Crichton at the helm, it was pretty good stuff. – Tom Selleck- A.V. Club Interview 

Sadly for Selleck, none of the movies did particularly well at the box office, with Runaway doing just awful, opening in seventh place at the box office and being beaten by notorious bombs The Cotton Club and Dune. In the end, the film eked out a disastrous $6.7 Million at the box office and temporarily ended Selleck’s big screen career (although three years later, his Three Men and a Baby would become the biggest film of 1987). Crichton’s career as a director also took a hit, with him only helming one bad Burt Reynolds vehicle, Physical Evidence, in 1989, before turning his attention back to the page so he could write a crazy-sounding book about a dinosaur amusement park.

WHY IT’S GREAT: Ok, so “Best movie” might be a little too generous for Runaway, but as a kid growing up in the late eighties/ early nineties, Runaway was a favorite. It’s easy to look back at it now and laugh at the hilariously low-tech robots (a shot of Selleck’s robot nanny making pasta is especially bad), but this is still a fun sci-fi actioner. In fact, those of you who might be younger but super into eighties retro stuff like Kung Fury might get a real kick out of the unapologetically silly (made better by the fact that it tries to be so serious) flick.

There are a lot of things to like about Runaway, chief of which is Tom Selleck’s straight-laced performance. Say what you will about the guy, but he wanted to be a movie star, so he delivers in Runaway, even if I suspect he knew deep down there was no way this would really work. It’s kinda strange seeing him waltz around a futuristic L.A. Maybe copying Harrison Ford’s career so closely was a bad plan – as I’m sure him playing a futuristic L.A cop had more than a little to do with Blade Runner. Selleck really came into his own when he was more laid-back and likable, like on “Magnum P.I” and his latter-movies (Quigley Down Under is especially solid), so it’s weird to see him so serious here, but it works.

It’s also worth noting in this MeToo era that he’s among the most gentlemanly heroes of the eighties, treating his female partner with respect (they become an item but she makes all the moves), being ultra-professional with a female suspect he has to search (the late Kirstie Alley in an early role), and never indulging in the casual sexism you might expect given the era and genre. I’m not trying to be overtly P.C as these movies are a product of their time, but it’s a nice, forward-thinking touch.

BEST SCENE: The only thing people really remember about Runaway is the MacGuffin, and it’s a good one. Simmons’s baddie invents a heat-seeking bullet that chases Selleck around during the chase sequences, and the bullet POV shots are incredible, even if they seem to have eaten up the budget, with the animation for the bullets absent the entire third act.

PARTING SHOT: Runaway is a silly slice of eighties cheese, but I’ve watched it many times over the years, and I always have a great time. It’s a pretty nostalgic flick for me, and a guaranteed good time for anyone interested in this era.

The episode of WTF Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Summer of Sam was Written by Mike Holtz, Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

These days it’s commonplace for True Crime stories to fill the corners of any entertainment outlet. Whether it’s film, TV, or podcasts. Hell, we probably wouldn’t bat an eye were we standing in a McDonald’s at 9 AM on Easter Sunday and heard the grizzly story of a banker sticking his ex-wife and her chihuahua into a wood chipper coming at us from the TV in the corner. We’re pretty desensitized when it comes to using the tragedies of other human beings as entertainment. I’m not judging you, Peter. I’m just as culpable. But in 1999, when Spike Lee set out to direct a film about serial killer David Berkowitz, the world wasn’t so at peace with this part of ourselves. Not when they initially heard the idea, and still not later on when they found out Summer of Sam (watch it HERE) would actually be about New York City as a whole in the mid-1970s. The heat waves, blackouts, Reggie Jackson, the New York Yankees, a guy named Vinny who was seriously horny, and his goofy friends… This is the story of that story, and how making it resulted in Spike Lee, with a frightened family at home, telling an interviewer on a popular television program that the editor of the New York Daily News deserved to get hit with a baseball bat. This is what the f*ck happened to Summer of Sam.

It all started when, in Spike Lee’s own words, “I could not find a job that summer. So I just ran around with a Super 8 camera. Just documenting stuff. So, when this script was brought to me. I said ‘I love this script’. At first, I wanted Michael (Imperioli) to direct it, I was going to executive produce. Could not get it set up. I did a rewrite. Two or three years later, took it to (Producer) Joe Roth. I recently did ‘He Got Game’ for him. He said ‘Fine let’s make the film’”

The script brought to him was by none other than Christopher Moltisanti himself, Michael Imperioli of Sopranos fame, along with Victor Colicchio, who would later work with Lee again on Denzel Washington’s Inside Man. The script ended up as a loosely based true story of a group of friends living in the Italian-American neighborhoods of the Bronx as the evil of the “Son of Sam” killer loomed over the group and the city as a whole.

Between 1976 and 1977, David Berkowitz killed six people and injured seven more, causing panic in the city as law enforcement seemed unable to stop him and with the media heavily covering the killings. He would walk up to people usually in their cars and fire at them multiple times with a .44 Caliber handgun, leaving him with the moniker of, at the time, “the .44 Caliber killer”. Eventually, Berkowitz would leave a note behind on the scene for the police and the media that would read something like a Longlegs cosplayer would conjure. Some of which is featured word for word in the film as well as another letter that was sent to Journalist Jimmy Breslin who bookends Summer of Sam with cameos. Later, when caught, Berkowitz tried to plead insanity by saying a neighbor’s dog told him to kill those people. He would eventually admit this was a con to try and fool the courts. Berkowitz is thankfully still in prison today, claiming to be a changed man and evangelical Christian, even calling himself the son of “hope”. Now, if you’ll excuse me I have to throw up in my own shoes.

Though Berkowitz looms and is the most visceral plotline of the film, it is one of many. This plot is stuffed like a pre-inflation Chipotle burrito. 

The main character, Vinny, is a hairdresser who habitually cheats on his wife and has a serious complex about sex, marriage, and religion. John Leguizamo would put together a great performance in the role that he said was very hard to do, with a lot of the scenes being very disturbing. And he’s not even talking about the murders but rather the spiral his character goes down with his wife and friends. He would say himself, “It was an emotionally difficult movie for me to go through.” Leguizamo, forever an underrated actor, impressed in the role that at least one group didn’t want him to have…. Spike Lee would recount, “There was some undercurrent from some of the people involved in the project that John Leguizamo was wrong for the part because he did not have the blood. But I felt that he’s such a great actor….Al Pacino wasn’t Cuban.” referencing Al Pacino’s portrayal of Tony Montana in Scarface.

Leguizamo would confirm in an interview that his character was based on a real person, as was the character of Richie, loosely based on writer Victor Colicchio’s life during the time. Richie would be played by Oscar winner Adrien Brody in one of the many fascinating, ballsy choices of the actor’s career. Richie is a guy who has become enamored with the punk rock culture of the time, even changing his accent to sound as if he’s from the UK and sporting a dog chain around his neck amongst various vibrant punk rock hairstyles. One of which was a gigantic blonde mohawk that Brody had done for real. Brody would walk around at the time and gauge passersby’s reactions to him as a bit of research for his character in Summer of Sam, saying “I mean there was a metamorphosis when I did that. It was shocking and I felt crazy.” he would go on, “I actually left it on purpose to kind of stay within that frame of mind, and also see how people act toward somebody who looked different. Which is what my character was going through so much in the film. And you know, people step aside and people call you names and are saying things. Derogatory things. “

Richie’s character goes on a wild ride in the film and eventually starts a punk band of his own. Summer of Sam had a punk rock energy to the film in its very own “don’t give a f*ck” way and featured a time capsule of a moment in punk rock history with the original CBGB location taking center stage, with shots of actual Lower Manhattan punk band L.E.S (Lower East Side) Stitches performing in the movie. Spike Lee also mentioned in the Blu-ray commentary that the film was the first time The Who ever allowed anyone to use “Baba O’Riley” in a film before after he wrote them a letter. One of the small subplots of Summer of Sam’s many subplots is the rise of punk culture at the time and the “normal folks” angry reaction to it. This, along with Richie’s propensity for making porn with his girlfriend, and doing artsy male stripping at a local gay club, led to his former friends believing Richie was the .44 Caliber killer and event the leader of a Satanic cult. This gives the film a Satanic Panic! Edge as well.

Originally, Richie was supposed to be the main character of the story but Spike Lee became enamored with Leguizamo’s ability to improvise and ended up giving his character the bulk of the screen time. Some of these moments include Vinny dumping a cup of coffee on his boss’s head or an argument in the cemetery where Lee told Leguizamo to spit on fellow actress Mira Sorvino without her knowledge. Of this moment, Sorvino said, “I didn’t know he had said this. But because we trusted each other, when he spit in my face, I slapped him in his face. Then we went on with the scene and I jump out of the car, screaming in this cemetery. None of that was in the script. It just happened, and it was all caught, and it was all in the movie. And I love working that way.” In a film that’s loaded with a great ensemble cast, both Leguizamo, Brody, and Sorvino, shine in the roles that weren’t easy to play.

Speaking of Mira Sorvino, the Replacement Killers actress was involved with the project very early on and even did screentests with Benicio Del Toro, who was at one point attached as a lead in the film as the character of Vinnie, along with Leonardo DiCaprio, attached as the Richie character. Sorvino had originally signed on to play the character of Ruby but ended up playing Vinny’s tortured wife Dionna. The role had her going from a loving and loyal wife who loved to dance, to a woman dragged through the mud trying to please her cheating husband. One scene, in particular, had Sorvino and Leguizamo’s characters participating in an orgy that had left her crying in the corner, thinking “I did not become an actress to do this”. She went on to praise the experience of working with Spike Lee overall but found this particular scene to be “demoralizing” to film. 

The character Sorvino was originally supposed to play had been Richie’s partner in crime, Ruby, whose role ended up going to the fun-loving Jennifer Esposito. In a role attached to Sarah Michelle Gellar at one point, Esposito gave the performance of a woman full of life whilst being surrounded by sadness and death. She even did an entire song on stage with her and Brody reciting ‘Summer of Sam’ letter lines as lyrics in their punk band ‘Late-Term Abortion’ at CBGB’s. 

The crew around them acting like the mob members from Haddonfield in Halloween IV when Michael Myers was on the loose, included Michael Rispoli (who played Jackie in The Sopranos) and Saverio Guerra. The two were on their own witch hunt and ended up trying to round up Richie so they could take him to their boss Luigi, who happens to be the late Ben Gazzara, or as you may remember him, the main bad guy from Road House as well as his many other roles throughout his lifetime. Michael Imperioli did have a small part in the film as a fiery gay strip club frontman, but he too was originally slated to play Adrien Brody’s Richie character before the scheduling with the Sopranos had him change course. Even the hopeless detectives on the Summer of Sam case were actors of note with the always commanding presence of Final Destination’s Roger Guenveur Smith. And a man who always makes you wish you could see more of, who just oozes hapless charisma, Joe from Empire Records, Anthony LaPaglia.

Summer of Sam takes this impressive cast that’s willing to go to the wall with their performances and paints an extremely rugged picture of a rough life for our characters. There are good moments for these people that include love, dancing, partying, and laughing. But mostly they are surrounded by the garbage, poverty, and paranoia of the city as the sun bakes them in a melting pot of despair you can smell through the screen. Everyone seems entertained and caught up in the madness of their lives, but no one seems to be happy or feel alright with themselves deep down. Yet most of these characters have a depth to them where you can see their joy for life buried somewhere in them, afraid to come to the forefront almost as if it’d get mugged from them in the street were they to show it.

Everyone has a fascinating side to them. Even if at some point I wanted to tap Spike Lee on the shoulder and just ask “Exactly how many times do we have to watch Vinny have sex before we get the point?”. I’m in no way offended by it but at two hours and twenty-two minutes, one starts to wonder how much of this is truly necessary. I mean this thing is an omnibus of Vinny f*cking. But even those moments brought forth some hilariously deranged Quentin Tarantino-esque script moments such as Vinny explaining to Richie with conviction that he cheats because God doesn’t want men doing dirty things with their wives. 

It’s a strange film. While everything we’re watching feels like it has a personal depth that’s going to lead somewhere profound, the film ends with the killer being unceremoniously captured, Dionna finally telling Vinny to get lost, and our group of idiots trying to pin the killings on Richie for being a weirdo before realizing Berkowitz was already in police custody and announced as the killer. It’s a scene that is tense and actually ended up with Adrien Brody having his nose broken in real life….but as the destination at the end of this long and winding road? It left some audience members wondering the point of it all.

As the marketing for Summer of Sam ramped up, so did the criticism of Spike Lee for making it. The New York Times even interviewed Berkowitz, asking how he felt about the film. Which, understandably sparked a fury in Lee who said he wanted to “do a film that’s not disrespectful or at the same time did not glorify and glamorize David Berkowitz. Which the New York Times did.” and later explained, “They made me switch places. I was the serial killer and he was the sympathetic character. And on top of that. The asshole writer. Of course, I said the word ASSHOLE. He included a paragraph that named my wife and my two children. And the editor? Whoever edited that should be hit in the head with a baseball bat for allowing that to stay in the article. There’s no reason in the world where they had to include that sentence where this mass murderer talks about my children.”

Lee wasn’t done there, also questioning, “I’m the one who is taking advantage of this?? The post and the daily news doubled their circulation. The post has started a whole week series called the Summer of Sam. It’s going through the rest of the week until the movie opens Friday.” Lee was even called racist for the film’s alleged Latin American stereotypes, to which he responded “What their trying to do is undermine the film. Simple as that”, and that “people are smart and they are going to see this stuff as BS. They are going to go see the film and make up their own minds.”

After an agreement with the dreaded MPAA, two minutes of the film were cut out (mostly from the orgy scene), to avoid an NC-17 rating. The film proudly wore an R rating on its chest that included many, many sex scenes. Seriously, if you want to see John Leguizamo in a sex scene… this is your Superbowl. But also, Summer of Sam features the word “fuck” an impressive 435 times. I don’t know who sat down and counted that…but damn. Get a job.

Summer of Sam premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999, released wide less than two months later to the tune of almost $6 million domestically on its opening weekend. Summer of Sam ended its run with a domestic gross of just over $19 million. The budget was $22 million. 

As of today, Summer of Sam sits on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes with a 50% critics score. The Chicago Reader’s Jonathan Rosenbaum echoed my own sentiments that “this bites off more than it can chew, but the breadth and energy are impressive.” Audiences ask for originality all the time, especially in today’s IP-heavy landscape. But it’s also human nature we still show up to the theater with a certain subconscious expectation that a film is going to be digestible in a way that other films that came before it were. Summer of Sam didn’t check those boxes at the time. But it does appear that time has been kind to Spike Lee’s controversial film. The film that opened to a lowly D minus Cinemascore currently sits with a 60% “Fresh” audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. And that my friends is just WTF Happened to Summer of Sam. People.com has just reported that daytime talk show host icon Phil Donahue has passed away at the age of 88. In a statement provided by his family, they confirmed that Donahue had “died in his home surrounded by his family including his wife of 44 years — actress Marlo Thomas — as well as his sister, his children, grandchildren and his beloved golden retriever, Charlie.” The statement also confirmed that he had “passed away peacefully following a long illness.” The family also requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund.

Those of you who grew up in the 90s probably caught the tail-end of his famous talk show Donahue, which he created and hosted as it evolved from the local series The Phil Donahue Show from Dayton, Ohio, in 1967 to the New York City institution, which concluded in September of 1996.

His show would gather viewers by hitting the hard topics that broadcast television would seldom devote time and discussion to. These issues would include child abuse in the Catholic Church, feminism and race relations. His show would also institute the groundbreaking practice of having members from his audience ask questions to the guests in order to gain more perspective and clarity. In 1974, Donahue blazed the trail to this famous daytime talk show format when he moved his show from Dayton to Chicago.

Ron Weiner, the former director of Donahue, had told WGN in 2023, “When Phil came to Chicago, he found his most important element — the Chicago studio audience. From that point, the program really took off.” In that story, Donahue himself added, “One day, I just went out in the audience, and it’s clear there would be no Donahue show if I hadn’t somehow accidentally brought in the audience.” 

Donahue’s format would give way to shows like Oprah, in which the famous host would acknowledge in a September 2002 issue of O Magazine, “If there had been no Phil Donahue show, there would be no Oprah Winfrey Show. He was the first to acknowledge that women are interested in more than mascara tips and cake recipes — that we’re intelligent, we’re concerned about the world around us and we want the best possible lives for ourselves.”

Donahue’s career would include an incredible win of 20 Emmy Awards and his popular format was carried on with hosts like Oprah Winfrey, Geraldo Rivera, Ricki Lake, Sally Jesse Raphael and Montel Williams. The format would also receive a sensationalistic makeover when The Jerry Springer Show brought a new kind of crude action and excitement to the format.

Back in 1993, Sega released a fighting game called Eternal Champions, aiming to capitalize on the popularity of the previous two years’ Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, but also making sure to put “a heavier emphasis” on this game’s story along the way. Eternal Champions didn’t turn out to be as popular as Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat were but it clearly has a following, because more than thirty years after the game’s initial release, Skydance is moving forward with a film adaptation.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger are producing the film for Skydance, while Toru Nakahara, who has overseen the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, is producing for Sony. Rob Ree serves as executive producer. Aimee Rivera is overseeing the project for Skydance.

Derek Connolly, who worked on Kong: Skull Island and all three Jurassic World movies, is working on the screenplay.

Here’s what Eternal Champions is all about: In order to change the dire fate of Earth, a being known as the Eternal Champion marshals the souls of key humans from across history, people who were destined for greatness but died before fulfilling their promise. The individuals are thrown into a contest of champions, with the winner regaining their life and becoming the hero Earth needs in order to restore balance, while the others return to moments before their death.

The game had nine playable characters:

Blade – Jonathan Blade is a Syrian bounty hunter from 2030 A.D. He was hired by the government to help track down a terrorist that had stolen a lethal virus. Blade was about to apprehend the terrorist when special forces agents opened fire on both of them, accidentally causing the terrorist to drop the vial and release the virus.

Jetta – Jetta Maxx is a member of Russian aristocracy from 1899 A.D. She was working undercover as a circus acrobat at the time of her death. A boxer revolutionary tampered with her tightrope equipment ahead of a major show in China. She fell to her death in front of the live crowd. When her true identity was revealed, it heightened tensions between both nations.

Larcen – Larcen Tyler is a former cat-burglar from 1920s Chicago. He used to do jobs for a local crime boss. He was hired to plant evidence in the hospital room of a rival mafia leader. It was only when he got to the location that he discovered that his real target was the Chief of Police, and the “evidence” was actually a bomb. Larcen was killed in the explosion that destroyed most of the hospital.

Midknight – Midknight is a vampire-like mutant hiding in Vietnam. In his former life, he was the noted British biochemist Mitchell Middleton Knight. He was hired by U.S. forces to spike water supplies during the Vietnam War in 1967. He became exposed to the chemical, and was mutated like every other victim. He was killed by a vampire hunter hired by the government before he could create a cure.

R.A.X. – R.A.X. Coswell is an American cyber-kickboxer from 2345 A.D. His trainer programmed a virus into his R.A.X. exoskeleton software to ensure he lost an important match. Coswell died during the match as a result.

Shadow – Shadow Yamato is a ninja assassin from modern-day (1993 A.D) Japan. She was thrown off the top of her employer’s skyscraper before she could publicly expose the murderous actions of her syndicate.

Slash – Slash is a prehistoric hunter from 50,000 B.C. He was sentenced to death by the elders of his tribe who feared that Slash would use his high intelligence to usurp them.

Trident – An artificial being created by the Atlanteans from 110 B.C. He was killed by a rival before he could compete in the final match of a gladiator tournament. As a consequence, the Roman Empire banished his race to the sea where they were eventually wiped out.

Xavier – Xavier Pendragon was an alchemy student from 1692 A.D. He was executed under a false charge of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials.

Party time is not so excellent for Brian Cox. As Deadpool & Wolverine easily crosses the $1 billion threshold at the worldwide box office, one Brian Cox – who has his own link to Marvel via playing William Stryker in X2 – is taking issue with comic book movies as a whole via one of the biggest hits of 2024.

Speaking to an audience at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (via THR), Brian Cox said that the artform of film has been heading in the wrong direction, especially compared to TV. “What’s happened is that television is doing what cinema used to do…I think cinema is in a very bad way. I think it’s lost its place because of, partly, the grandiose element between Marvel, DC and all of that. And I think it’s beginning to implode, actually. You’re kind of losing the plot.”

Ever since the Marvel Cinematic Universe launched with Iron Man in 2008 (the year that The Dark Knight Rises actually dominated the box office) only three years haven’t seen a comic book movie in the top 10 worldwide – and two of those either didn’t have a major release or are directly pinned to the Covid-19 pandemic. But Brian Cox has been around long enough to know just why people keep hitting the multiplex. “[They are] making a lot of money that’ll make everybody happy, but in terms of the work, it becomes diluted afterwards. You’re getting the same old… I mean, I’ve done those kind of [projects],” referring to the aforementioned X2. He added, “So it’s just become a party time for certain actors to do this stuff. When you know that Hugh Jackman can do a bit more, Ryan Reynolds…but it’s because they go down that road and it’s box office. They make a lot of money. You can’t knock it.”

Brian Cox has never been one to shy away from his takes on pretty much everything related to the industry. Three years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and had little to do with the source material. Earlier this year, it was announced that Glen Powell of Top Gun: Maverick, Hit Man, and Twisters is following in the footsteps of Schwarzenegger to play the lead role in the new adaptation – and during a recent interview, Powell said that, while the new film is expected to be closer to King’s writing than the first adaptation was, it will still have that “fun Edgar Wright flavor” to it.

Powell told Screen Rant that he’s preparing for The Running Man. “I have been doing a lot of sprinting. That’s all I can say. I’ve been working on my sprint. [Laughs] No, I’ll say that Edgar Wright has been one of my favorite filmmakers for as long as I can remember. I think since Shaun of the Dead, I was like, ‘I can’t wait to work with this guy.’ And he just keeps churning out brilliant things that only his brain could concoct. The Running Man is something he’s so passionate about, and we’re really taking the Stephen King book and just adding a lot of fun Edgar Wright flavor to it, and it has been awesome. That’s going to be a really fun one; I’m super excited about it.“

Wright is producing the film with Nira Park and Simon Kinberg.

King’s novel has the following description: It was the ultimate death game in a nightmare future America. The year is 2025 and reality TV has grown to the point where people are willing to wager their lives for a chance at a billion-dollar jackpot. Ben Richards is desperate – he needs money to treat his daughter’s illness. His last chance is entering a game show called The Running Man where the goal is to avoid capture by Hunters who are employed to kill him. Surviving this month-long chase is another issue when everyone else on the planet is watching – and willing to turn him in for the reward.

During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year, Wright said he was drawn to The Running Man because, “I like the film but I like the book more, and they didn’t really adapt the book. Even as a teenager when I saw the Schwarzenegger film I was like, ‘Oh, this isn’t like the book at all!’ And I think, ‘Nobody’s [done] that book.’ So when that came up, I was thinking, and Simon Kinberg says, ‘Do you have any interest in The Running Man?’ I said, ‘You know what? I’ve often thought that that book is something crying out to be adapted.’ Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s easy! [Laughs] But it’s something that we are working on, yes.”

WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS welcomes back to the big screen fan-favorite characters in a trio of all-new feature films coming to theaters beginning this fall.

• Disney Animation's "Moana 2" kicked off the showcase with a crowd-pleasing performance by the phenomenal voice of Moana herself, Auli'i Cravalho, alongside dancers and drummers from Nonosina Polynesia. Fans were among the first ever to hear "We're Back," an all-new song written by Grammy®-winning songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear—one of several new songs to be featured in the film that reunites Moana and Maui for an expansive new voyage. Following the performance, Dwayne Johnson, the inimitable voice of demigod Maui, hit the stage to greet fans and drum up excitement, revealing for the first time a new trailer and poster, which are now available. Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, the new film opens only in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024.
• Fans went wild for the studio's highly anticipated follow-up to "Zootopia," 2016's Oscar®-winning feature film. AVATAR continues to enchant and excite global audiences, and franchise creator James Cameron was on site to share details about the next chapter. 

• The excited crowd offered a warm D23 welcome to Cameron, who will become an official Disney Legend this weekend. Joined by "Avatar" stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, Cameron revealed for the first time the title of the third film in the remarkably successful "Avatar" franchise: "Avatar: Fire and Ash," which takes audiences back to Pandora in an immersive new adventure with Marine turned Na'vi leader Jake Sully (Worthington), Na'vi warrior Neytiri (Saldaña) and the Sully family. Directed by Cameron, the new film from 20th Century Studios and Lightstorm Entertainment also stars Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Oona Chaplin, Jack Champion, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss and Bailey Bass. PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIOS' Pete Docter invited fans inside his own mind where his Emotions were both grateful—"Inside Out 2" recently became the number-one animated film of all time—and excited about what's next from the studio.

• Docter revealed the official launch date of Pixar's first original series "Win or Lose," which begins streaming exclusively on Disney+ on Dec. 6, 2024. Directed, written and executive produced by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, and produced by David Lally, the new series reveals what it feels like to be in the shoes of eight different characters—the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick umpire—as they prepare for a championship softball game. • Coming to Disney+ in 2025 is "Dream Productions," a just-announced series from the world of "Inside Out" about the studio inside Riley's mind where dreams really do come true thanks to acclaimed dream director Paula Persimmon (voice of Paula Pell). Written and directed by Mike Jones and produced by Jaclyn Simon, the four-episode series also features the voices of Richard Ayoade, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Alli Maki, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Lewis Black and Phyllis Smith. • The D23 audience was cosmically chosen to learn more about Pixar's upcoming feature film "Elio." DISNEY ON BROADWAY celebrated its 30th anniversary with a thrilling medley of performances and exclusive announcements from its hit stage musicals. Told through the perspective of four kids, Lucasfilm's "Skeleton Crew" follows them as they make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy, crossing paths with the likes of Jod Na Nawood, a mysterious character that Law portrays. The coming-of-age series also stars Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, Tunde Adebimpe, Kerry Condon and Nick Frost. • Feige discussed next month's launch of Marvel Television's new series "Agatha All Along" in which the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Fans were the first to see a brand-new, decidedly dark and mysterious trailer—a tone that continued when series stars Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza, Patti LuPone, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn and Debra Jo Rupp performed a magical new song, "The Ballad of the Witches Road." Set after the events of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," Marvel Television's "Ironheart" pits technology against magic when Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne)—a young, genius inventor determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. • Disney's "Mufasa: The Lion King" closed the studio's showcase, beginning with Lebo M., who contributes to the film's music, performing the iconic "Nants' Ingonyama" alongside a full choir. Director Barry Jenkins welcomed to the stage "Mufasa" songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda in his first-ever D23 appearance. Together, they offered a special look at a sequence from the film featuring a new song, "I Always Wanted a Brother." Cast members Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Theo Somolu, Braelyn Rankins and Anika Noni Rose were introduced after Jenkins shared details about the all-new story that introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka. Fans were among the first to see the new trailer before being treated to a show-stopping finale by Lebo M. and choir, who returned to the stage to perform a new song called "Ngomso." • "TRON: Ares" stars Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee, Evan Peters and Jared Leto garnered huge applause from the audience—Leto, who portrays Ares, hit the stage in style alongside an iconic Lightcycle. Cast members shared details about their characters as well as an in-room-only early look. After a sonic assault, lasers burned into the screens, which parted to reveal "music by NINE INCH NAILS." Slated for theatrical release on Oct. 10, 2025, "TRON: Ares" follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind's first encounter with A.I. beings. • Fans gave a warm welcome to Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, the stars of the upcoming "Freaky Friday" follow-up—who revealed to fans for the first time the sequel's official title, "Freakier Friday," which heads to theaters in 2025. Directed by Nisha Ganatra and produced by Kristin Burr, Andrew Gunn and Curtis, the new film picks up years after Curtis and Lohan's characters, Tess and Anna, first endured an identity crisis: Anna has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate challenges that come when two families merge, they discover that lightning might indeed strike twice. "Freakier Friday" also stars Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao. • Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino hosted the Music of Marvel panel, where he was joined by composers Christophe Beck and Laura Karpman, songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and music supervisors Dave Jordan and Justine von Winterfeldt to talk about their favorite scores, songs, and needle drops from Marvel Studios' movies and series. • There was excitement today at the Lucasfilm Pavilion, when a new trailer was unveiled for "LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy." Showrunners, writers, executive producers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit were on hand at the Lucasfilm booth along with executive producer and Lucasfilm senior vice president, Franchise Content & Strategy James Waugh to offer fans more information about the animated special that sees the entire Star Wars Galaxy get completely mixed up when an ordinary nerf-herder, Sig Greebling (Gaten Matarazzo), unearths a powerful artifact from a hidden Jedi temple. He finds himself thrust into adventure in a new, wondrously wild and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are bad, bad guys are good, and the fate of all depends on Sig becoming the hero who can put all the pieces back together.

Glen Powell’s stock rose significantly since his turn as the traditional team antagonist in Top Gun: Maverick, which followed in the footsteps of Val Kilmer’s Iceman in the original. As he partakes in romcoms (Anyone But You), quirky character pieces (Hit Man) and the upcoming big-budget disaster film, Twisters, the last year has been quite the ride for Powell. Of the many projects he’s been announced to partake in the future, one that the star admitted he vied for was the lead in Edgar Wright’s upcoming re-adaptation of The Running Man.

IndieWire recently sat down with the star when the subject of The Running Man entered the chat. Powell stated, “It was so fun for me because I searched ‘Edgar Wright’ in my email the other day, writing ‘Edgar.’ We’ve been going back and forth on script stuff, and it’s so fun. The world that Edgar’s developed on this thing is just outrageous. It’s so good. And really, we’re just both such big fans of the Stephen King book, and it’s going to be a great character. I’m so fired up about it. But I searched my email, and I searched Edgar Wright in my email, and it came up: I had a wish list of directors that I wanted to work with in 2008 when I moved out to LA that I sent my agent at the time — and Edgar Wright is literally number one. I’m such an Edgar Wright man. And so, the fact that I get to work with him right now is just so damn cool.”

The Twisters star said he had told Wright about his wishlist, “Yeah, I made a bit of an 11th-hour plea to him on the job. To just let him know, anybody that’s ever worked with me knows, you’re never going to outbeat my work ethic on stuff. But sometimes it’s just a good reminder for a filmmaker to know, hey, when we get in the trenches, I’m going to serve it up. I’m going to deliver. And I’m going to deliver for you because not only do I take this job seriously, but I’m also just a fan, and you don’t want to disappoint your heroes … Edgar has also become a friend in the last few years. So that’s been really fun for us to finally get in the trenches together.”

The upcoming nominations for the best in television have been announced. The list of this year’s nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmys has been announced today by actors Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale in Hollywood. This year’s event has a rare distinction of taking place less than a year after the last event, which had been postponed to January of this year due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes that lasted for a bigger part of the summer and fall in 2023. Last year’s Emmys included winners from such shows as The Bear, Abbott Elementary and HBO’s massively popular series Succession. The ceremony is set to take place on September 15 (ABC, 8 EDT/5 PDT), exactly eight months after the 75th Primetime Emmys were presented on Fox. The Hollywood Reporter has listed the nominations for this year, so here are the 2024 Emmy nominees:

"Regulated industry plays a critical role in ensuring consumers have accurate information about medical products. We've updated our draft guidance to help further ensure industry has clarity and additional flexibility to promptly and proactively issue responsive communications to address misinformation they are seeing," said FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, M.D. "The growing spread of rumors about science and medicine continues to put patients and consumers at risk. We remain steadfast in our commitment to address this public health concern and continue to support and encourage all parties in the public health ecosystem to take an active role."

In today's health care system, health care providers and consumers often turn to the internet to obtain health and medical-related information. However, not all information found online about medical products is reliable. There are many false statements and conclusions shared online and the structure and popularity of social media platforms have meant that false, inaccurate and/or misleading information about medical products can spread rapidly to a broad audience. Basing medical decisions on inaccurate information can have adverse consequences as it can lead patients and health care providers to choose treatments that are not safe and effective, or to forgo treatments that are. The FDA believes it is critically important to promptly address misinformation about medical products. The revised draft guidance issued today supports the efforts of medical product companies that share this interest in helping the public get factual, accurate and scientifically sound information about medical products.

Specifically, the revised draft guidance, Addressing Misinformation About Medical Devices and Prescription Drugs Questions and Answers, sets out a policy that supports companies that issue certain kinds of internet-based communications ("tailored responsive communications") to address internet-based misinformation about or related to their approved/cleared medical products when that misinformation is created or disseminated by an independent third party. For example, a company might choose to use this type of communication when a celebrity, healthcare provider or influencer, not acting on behalf of the company, posts false, inaccurate and/or misleading representations of fact about the company's approved/cleared medical product on social media. Additionally, this revised draft guidance provides companies with many examples that illustrate the types of misinformation found online that a company might choose to address with a tailored responsive communication, along with some considerations relevant to the current digital information environment.

The revised draft guidance also describes existing avenues ("general medical product communications") that companies might also choose to use to address misinformation about their medical products wherever that misinformation may appear. This draft guidance revises and replaces the draft guidance for industry, Internet/Social Media Platforms: Correcting Independent Third-Party Misinformation About Prescription Drugs and Medical Devices, issued in June 2014. The revised draft guidance is open for public comment for 60 days.

In addition to providing these updated draft recommendations, the FDA has taken and will continue to take steps to communicate accurate, up-to-date, science-based information to the public. Some examples of such efforts include:  

• Providing timely, digestible, factual information to news media and other organizations;
• Creating resources on the FDA's website and social media to address common questions about the products the agency regulates;
• Participating in speaking engagements to draw attention to the dangers of misinformation and to provide factual information about FDA-regulated medical products and public health issues;
• Providing interested parties with toolkits of resources; and
• Posting memos and other regulatory documents that outline the agency's decision-making, consistent with applicable law(s).

The FDA will continue to proactively offer resources about medical products to provide factual and scientifically sound information to the public. The agency remains committed to helping address misinformation and continues to support other interested parties that choose to engage on this critical issue.

Writer/director Damien Leone had a budget of around $55,000 to work with on his breakout horror film Terrifier, and a budget of “a little over” $250,000 for Terrifier 2, which was a massive hit when it was released last year, earning $15.1 million at the box office. Since the second film did so well, Terrifier 3 has a substantially higher budget. A “couple million” is going into this one, and we’re going to get the chance to see how that translates to the screen when the film receives a theatrical release on October 11th. We still have a while to wait for this one, but today our friends at Bloody Disgusting have unveiled an image from the film that shows Art the Clown with a box cutter. That’s not going to be a good combination for anyone unlucky enough to cross his path. You can check out the image at the bottom of this article.

Terrifier 3 has the following synopsis: Art the Clown is set to unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve. 

David Howard Thornton reprises the role of Art the Clown, a character who was first introduced in Leone’s 2013 anthology All Hallows’ Eve (although Thornton didn’t start playing him until Terrifier). Also in the cast are Lauren LaVera, who’s back as Terrifier 2 heroine Sienna; Elliot Fullam returns as Sienna’s brother Jonathan, Samantha Scaffidi is returning as Terrifier and Terrifier 2 character Victoria Heyes, and Daniel Roebuck, who has been cast in the role of Santa Claus. FX legend Tom Savini will also be showing up, in an unspecified role. The same goes for Jon Abrahams, Antonella Rose, Krsy Fox, and legendary character actor Clint Howard. Chris Jericho, who had a cameo in Terrifier 2, is back in Terrifier 3 – but he has let everyone know that his appearance in the film won’t last very long.

Leone has said that this new sequel will be going back to the tone of the first movie, as he’s aiming to make the third film the scariest, goriest, and most depraved of the bunch. He’ll be pulling back on the mystical/fantasy element that was so prevalent in the second film, and is also aiming to make sure this one will be less than two hours long, since the second one surpassed the two hour mark. If you’re worried that Terrifier 3 might wrap the franchise up as a trilogy, have no fear. Leone knows that horror franchises always continue, and anything’s possible once the supernatural gets involved. So even if he brings a sequel to a satisfying conclusion for himself as the creator of the franchise, the door can always be opened to more sequels.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the movie industry saw the boom of the streaming age, with services proving to be the best way to catch flicks while cinemas were closed. One that emerged just before the pandemic was Disney+, which, like most, saw its subscription numbers grow during that time. With many still unsure if they wanted to return to the cinema in 2021, Disney made the decision to simultaneously release MCU entry Black Widow in theaters and on Disney+ through their Premier Access banner. This, as you remember, prompted lead Scarlett Johansson to file a lawsuit against Disney over breach of contract, the actress taking a stand in a way that no other star had before.

Disney would soon settle with Scarlett Johansson. And while she remains unsure if she would return as Black Widow, the actress maintains that she holds no permanent ill will against the House of Mouse. Speaking with The New York Times, Johansson said, “I don’t hold a grudge. I think it was just poor judgment and poor leadership at that time. It just felt very unprofessional to me, the entire ordeal. And honestly, I was incredibly disappointed, especially because I was holding out hope until, finally, my team was like, ‘You have to act.’”

At the time, a rep for Disney slammed Johansson for the suit while accusing her of downplaying the pandemic, saying, “There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”

Despite Disney’s release tactic – which Johansson claimed would cost her millions in box office points – Black Widow still pulled in $380 million worldwide, kicking off Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which also saw Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home out in 2021.

Terrifier cast member Michael Leavy has directed a new horror film called Stream – and not only has he brought Terrifier and Terrifier 2 director Damien Leone on board to handle the special effects, but he also packed the cast with genre icons. Leavy confirmed Moseley’s involvement to Variety after horror fans caught a quick glimpse of him in a trailer. Leavy said, “This is something we have been sitting on for quite a while and we are super honored and excited to have Bill showcase his talents on the big screen. Horror fans will not be disappointed! Stream is a fun ride and we hope everyone will pre-order their tickets to see it in theaters, spread the word and tell their friends to come along!“

Leavy directed the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jason Leavy, Steven Della Salla, and Robert Privitera. Here’s the synopsis: When Roy and Elaine Keenan realize their family is drifting apart, they decide that something needs to be done. Roy forces his work to take a back seat and they seize the opportunity to recreate a vacation from their past. A peaceful stay in a quaint hotel is just what they need, however that is not what is in store for them. With four deranged murderers patrolling the seemingly mundane halls, the odds are definitely not in the Keenan family’s favor. Roy must fight for his life and those of his family as their simple weekend getaway truly turns into a vacation to die for.

According to IMDb page for Stream, the Keenan family consists of characters played by Charles Edwin Powell, Danielle Harris, Sydney Malakeh, and Wesley Holloway.

A trailer for Stream was released last October and can be viewed at THIS LINK. About two months after sending this film to theatres, Iconic Events Releasing will also be giving Terrifier 3 a theatrical release. The date for that one is October 11th.
